Disclaimer is a 2024 psychological erotic thriller miniseries created, written, and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Renée Knight. Disclaimer follows acclaimed documentary journalist Catherine Ravenscroft, whose life unravels when she receives a mysterious novel in the mail. The book’s protagonist is based on her and exposes a devastating secret from her past in Italy that she has kept hidden for twenty years.
The design of the main title, as well as the opening and closing credits, was developed as an initial stage of the project. Since a book serves as a central narrative element and plays a fundamental role in the development of the story, the Garamond Premier Pro typeface was selected as a reference due to its classic character and long-standing use in editorial design. This choice helped establish a visual connection that reinforced the narrative elements present throughout the production.
The use of electronic devices played a fundamental role in the story's narrative development, requiring the director to maintain complete control over the messages and interactions exchanged by the characters through their mobile phones and computers.
A primary responsibility in this regard involved recreating user interfaces for applications such as Instagram, Messages, and other fictional apps for iOS and Android devices. Each application was designed and customized to meet the specific needs of the production. In addition, the interfaces were prepared to respond to and synchronize with the actors' movements and interactions while using the devices on screen.
